1. Easter Letter from the Pastor’s Office

Dear Brunswick Street Baptist Church Family,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ! As we approach Easter, we come again to the heart of our faith, the reason we even gather here at Brunswick Street Baptist Church: the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the hope it brings not only to each one of us, but to the world! Easter reminds us that God’s work in Christ is not just a story we can read about, but a living reality that continues to shape our lives in every way, even today. It is a story of hope: a hope that endures through hardship and a hope that often surprises us when we least expect it. A hope that transforms, is alive, and shapes everything about who we are as His followers.

The first followers of Jesus knew something about endurance and how surprising hope can be! The days between Good Friday and Easter morning were filled with grief, confusion, and fear. The disciples had watched the one they believed to be the Messiah suffer and die. The hopes they had carried seemed to collapse with the closing of the tomb. The person they had gone ‘all in’ on was no longer with them. They had no ‘normal’ life to go back to, they had given up everything to follow, and now, not only is that person no longer with them, but their entire life is also in pieces. On the road to Emmaus, two disciples confessed their deep disappointment and despair, saying,

“We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21)

Mary Magdalene stood weeping outside the tomb, unable to imagine that anything good could come from such loss (John 20:11–16). Those two reactions are so easy to understand and relate to. We had hoped, but hope is no more. You can hear the desolation, loneliness, hopelessness and despair in that statement. You can imagine the weeping outside the tomb, confusion, struggling to understand why things have gone this way. That feeling that there is no more hope. I’m sure we can all think of times we have felt in such a place. However, the wonderful news we are constantly reminded of at Easter is, as Pastor and Theologian Frederick Buechner tells us, “Resurrection means that the worst thing is never the last thing.” A humorous, yet profound reminder that no matter how bad the news, how difficult the situation, how tense or hopeless life may feel, as followers of Jesus we have a real and living hope that says we are not alone and, even if the very worst happens, we will find ourselves in the very presence of our Saviour where we long to be. This is why Paul can write the words,

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" (1 Corinthians 15:55)

We know that even in those very real moments of sorrow, like the first followers of Jesus, God has not abandoned us. The resurrection reminds us that God is often at work in ways we cannot yet see. As the apostle Paul also writes:

“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Romans 5: 3 – 4)

Christian hope is not a shallow optimism that ignores pain, or a crutch to support the week, instead, it is a deeper hope that learns to endure suffering in ways that astonish, because it trusts in the faithfulness of God and the goodness of His character and presence of His Spirit, even with the realities we are facing. What makes the Easter story even more remarkable is, in spite of Jesus warning the disciples what was ahead, how surprising they found it. None of the disciples arrived at the tomb expecting resurrection. The women who went early on the first day of the week carried spices for burial, not songs of celebration (Mark 16:1–6). Even after hearing the news, many struggled to believe it. Thomas famously said he would not believe unless he saw the risen Lord with his own eyes (John 20:24–29).

The resurrection was not something the disciples invented or anticipated—it was something God did that blew them away! Two beautiful lines shared by American Pastor Robert Farrar Capon about the surprising beauty and depth of God’s grace are: “Grace doesn’t seem fair. That’s because it isn’t. It’s better than fair,” and “Grace is the celebration of life, relentlessly hounding all the non-celebrants in the world.”

This is so often how God seems to work. When we are tempted to move into hopelessness, or find ourselves in a place of deep desolation and despair, or give in to cynicism, the Good News of the Gospel, the Kingdom of God, the beauty of grace, all that Jesus is and all that He has done, the Holy Spirit at work in the depths of our very being, ‘hounds’ us back to a place of hope and gratitude for what we have already been given. This has to recenter us on celebration, because as we remember with gratitude who God is and His love for us, how could our response be anything else?

Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord reminds us:

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways” (Isaiah 55:8)

The God who raised Jesus from the dead continues to bring life where we see only endings and to open doors where we see none. Easter reveals a God who surprises us with grace, renewal, and new beginnings. The God who continually works out His purposes in this world and whose Kingdom is here and is coming in completion one day! We cannot stay stuck in seasons of hopelessness. We cannot be defined by the darkness of the world, but instead by His grace, His Spirit and His power. We must be renewed by the Spirit and return to the light! Whether we think we deserve it, or not, whether we think God could use us, or not, we must persevere. We must continue to grow on our journey of discipleship and Sanctification. Even as we take up our cross daily and follow Jesus (Matthew 16:24), we are a people of resurrection hope and power!

Because Christ is risen, this hope is not limited to the past; it speaks powerfully into our present. Many among us carry burdens—illness, grief, uncertainty, or the quiet struggles of daily life. Yet the resurrection assures us that these things do not have the final word. As we reflected on earlier, Paul declares that death itself will ultimately be swallowed up in victory through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:54–57). The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is at work among us, bringing life, strength, and renewal (Romans 8:11). So, this means that hope is not only something we hold in our hearts, but also something we live out in the world, because Christ is risen, our labour in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). We continue to love, to serve, and to share the Good News, trusting that God is still at work in ways both quiet and extraordinary. We are not defined by anything in our past but continually moving forward in hope to the resurrection life to which we are called. As we know, His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Or as author Brennan Manning said: “Grace means that all of your mistakes now serve a purpose instead of serving shame.”

This line about grace must be so central in our understanding of our own faith. A serious question I think many followers of Jesus need to ask themselves is, when people observe my life as a Christian do they see a person full of fear, defined by mistakes and shame of the past, living without freedom, afraid of making any more? Or do they see a person living in the freedom provided by grace, living without fear, living and speaking with love? What people perceive in us will reveal either a God of oppressive judgement who expects a perfection we cannot ever attain, or a God who rejoices over us with singing (Zephaniah 3:17), who redeems us and forgives us of all our sins (Colossians 1:13-14) and sets us free from condemnation and fear (Romans 8:1-2). The God revealed in the Bible we love and follow is indeed the second God presented and you will notice there were only Scripture references for those answers!

My prayer for each of you this Easter is that the Lord would fill your hearts with joy, peace, and a deep confidence in the hope we have through Christ. May the resurrection remind us that God’s grace is stronger than despair and that new life is always possible in him. That life can be full of change, struggle and real reasons for concern, yet because of resurrection hope and power, we will never be defined by such things.

May the risen Christ renew our faith, strengthen our endurance, and continue to surprise us with the wonderful and powerful hope of His Kingdom and His presence.

Grace, peace, and blessings of this Easter Season,

Rev. Ross Watters

Lead Pastor

Please note "Easter Offering" on your envelope or e-Transfer, as we aim to reach our target of $9,000 for Easter 2025. 3. That Dark Thursday Night Maundy Thursday Worship Service | April 2 | 6:30 pm

The Maundy Thursday Service at BSBC on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 6:30 pm will be a time of worship as we recall the events surrounding the last hours of Jesus as shared with his disciples as well as observe the Lord’s Supper.

Through dramatic readings, we will hear the inner thoughts and feelings of three disciples, John, James and Peter, along with Mary of Bethany as they follow Jesus to the Upper Room, Garden of Gethsemane, and the courtyard where Jesus was taken before the night was over. It was a long night! In this hour-long service, we will reflect and be drawn closer to the passion of Christ and the impact on those who were close to Jesus through these hours. The question “Were you there when…?” will bring each of us into the experience of “That Dark Thursday Night” with Jesus.

4. Good Friday Community Worship Service | Friday, April 3 at Grace Memorial

A Good Friday shared community worship service with BSBC, Faith Baptist, and Grace Memorial, will be hosted by Grace Memorial Baptist Church, 536 Northumberland Street. We will have worship and messages from Pastor Larry Matthews, Pastor Peter Lohnes and Pastor Ross Watters as we come together to remember the sacrifice God made on our behalf and the impact of Jesus sacrifice on our life today. On Good Friday we remember that, God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! John 3:16-17. Join us as we celebrate this Good News!

9. Service Structure Planning and Consultation Information

Board of Deacons Subcommittee: Peter Cook, Andrew Culberson, Liz Smith, Stephen VanSlyke, & Pastor Ross Watters

Why A Change Now?

  • Capacity issues within the gym

  • Space for growth

  • An inviting space to allow new families to feel welcomed

  • Weekly set-up time & resources, inefficiencies/fatigue with getting sound right

  • Gym space setup is standard at 180 and most weeks there are limited seating options.

  • Parking on a Sunday morning often forces families to park and walk to BSBC.

  • We have engaged in two distinct worship services at BSBC for almost 20 years.

  • Maintaining current services is paramount within the shifts.

  • Deacons have prayerfully determined that maintaining and bolstering Sunday School is important moving forward.

  • Good Financial Stewardship

  • We need to use our current facilities and maximize the space God has provided to BSBC

Some Considerations

  • Unity in one church body

  • Engaged in 2 worship styles for over 20 years with adjustments

  • Services are deeply important

  • Financial stewardship (constraints)

  • Need to support both services with resources

  • Changes are significant and our culture can be deeply entrenched

Summary of Discussions & Collaboration

  • BOD discussions for more than 2 years

  • When calling an Associate Pastor, considered the connection between pastoral staff and service structures

  • December 2025 - Letter from a congregant was shared with the Deacons that clearly articulated the need for change and underscored the urgency

  • February 2026 - Deacons special meeting to develop possible options for service structure

  • Annual Meeting February 2026 - Chair of Deacons shared that there would be upcoming discussions around service structure

  • March 2026 - Consultation on potential changes

  • March 2026 – Today’s information meeting to share the plan for consultation and review as we create clear plans to implement change in September 2026

Goal to Have a Solution in Place for the Start of Fall Programming

  • Current plans involve a pilot (periodic review with the inclusion of a start date)

  • Using the sanctuary for both services at different times on a Sunday – referring to this as a ‘stacked’ model

  • Planning will be influenced by lead-up consultations with congregation stakeholder groups over the next few months

  • A fall start provides a runway for consultation and preparation

The Proposed Model

  • 2 services will be held in the sanctuary in a stacked format on a Sunday Morning

  • This requires both services to shift start and end times

  • Both worship services will remain distinct in their worship style

  • Keep Sunday School and work to bolster opportunities for connections between the two services

  • Use and maximize the current facilities with an openness to the potential of physical changes

Facilitate Multiple Small Group Consultation Listening Sessions

  • Sunday School teachers

  • Tech team members (both services)

  • Worship teams

  • Choir

  • Coffee ministry

  • Greeters/Ushers

  • Library

  • Others?

  • General congregation sessions to follow

Timeline

  • April - 3 virtual/in-person sessions & launch of email feedback

  • May - 3 virtual/in-person sessions

  • May (end) - Deacons will review the suggestions and data from the consultations

  • June - Follow-up with congregational meetings and information meetings (possibly on Sunday mornings)

  • Summer – Detailed planning

  • September - Launch

Questions & Brief Discussion

  • 15-20 minutes

  • 24-hour rule

  • Can repeat questions into the microphone

  • Questions focused on the principles, process, and perhaps consider groups that should be consulted

  • Points that suggest alternative thoughts & ideas will be steered toward feedback through the email address or small group or congregational feedback sessions

Feedback

To send your feedback to the Service Structure Planning and Consultation Subcommittee, please email:servicestructurefeedback@bsbc.nb.ca.

12. SAT Refugee Sponsorship Update

Dear BSBC family,

Your Social Action Team (SAT) would like to thank you for your continued support of refugees around the world who are living in desperate circumstances and seeking the chance to begin new lives here in Fredericton. We are excited to share a long-awaited update on the refugee family for whom we submitted a sponsorship application in 2023.

We are grateful to report that this family has finally been issued their visas to travel to Canada. They are now waiting for the international organization supporting them to book their travel. We have been advised that their arrival could take approximately 7 to 11 weeks; however, given the ongoing instability in the Middle East, timelines remain uncertain.

For those who may not be familiar with this sponsorship, the family of six is originally from Syria and is currently living as refugees in Lebanon. The family includes a father (50), a mother (39), three sons (21, 18, and 5), and a daughter (16). We were connected with them through Rachel Nesbitt, a former member of our congregation, who befriended their relatives here in Fredericton. Although the Nesbitt family has since moved away, Rachel continues to stay in contact with the family’s mother.

As many of you will have heard in the news, life in Lebanon has become increasingly dangerous over the past year. This family has been displaced twice due to the war with Israel, with bombing occurring very close to the village in southern Lebanon where they were living.

Once we have a clearer sense of their arrival date, we will share lists of household items and other needs so that those who wish can help us prepare their new home here in Fredericton. In the meantime, we still need to raise significant funds to support the family during their first 12 months in Canada.

We are thankful to share that, to date, a total of $34,162 has been raised for the refugee fund. Since our church voted at the 2022 Annual Business Meeting to pursue this sponsorship, more than $27,000 of that amount has been generously donated by you, our church family. We are deeply grateful for this support. However, with an estimated sponsorship cost for 12 months of $52,300, additional funds are still needed, as BSBC is responsible for covering the family’s living expenses for their first year in Canada. While travel costs are covered separately, once the family arrives in Fredericton, we must be prepared to fully support them.

We look forward to continuing to share updates as travel plans are finalized, as well as opportunities for you to help, connect, and walk alongside this family as they begin their new life here.

If you have any questions about this sponsorship, please feel free to contact Martina Verboom at sk8martina@gmail.com.

15. Volunteering Opportunities

A. Sunday Streets Muffin Ministry: May 24

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way. Your sweet generosity is more than just baked goods; it’s an expression of care and hope in Jesus’ name.

Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as May 24 for our Sunday night outreach program. As we prepare for the busy summer months, we aim to have 4 dozen muffins each week to ensure we’re well-stocked and ready to bless those we serve. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.

ONE Conference | June 5 and 6

ONE Conference is our annual youth gathering, where churches from across the Maritimes come together in a cross-denominational worship environment. This past year, over 3,000 students in Grades 6–12 gathered to worship Jesus.

This year, ONE Conference will take place June 5–6 at the Moncton Coliseum. Here’s a snapshot of what the weekend looks like: we’ll leave Fredericton around 3:00 pm and head to Moncton to arrive in time for the start of the event. The first afternoon and evening kick off with the Fun Zone (featuring bouncy castles and large inflatables), followed by a high-energy worship service with engaging speakers. The night wraps up with a performance by rap artist, Hulvey. After the evening concludes, we’ll head to Lower Coverdale Church for the night. The following day includes two main worship sessions, more time in the Fun Zone, and some free time before we head home around 5:00 pm.

For many Christian teens, ONE Conference is the highlight of the youth group year. It’s an incredible opportunity to worship alongside thousands of other students, hear from inspiring speakers, enjoy powerful worship music, and experience God in a fresh and meaningful way.

19. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: April 5

This Easter Sunday, we will be celebrating at the Lord’s Table. In the sanctuary, the worship team will be led by Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves with special music from the Handbell Choir and the Sanctuary Choir. In the gym, the worship team will be led by Julianne Moore. iTromboni will be making a special guest appearance in both services.

Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon, he says: “In the buildup to the 2026 Easter Celebration, we have been looking at the story through the lens of some of the minor characters in the supporting cast, noting that these figures often have major importance despite a limited role. For example, the criminal Barabbas is not given any direct speech, nor even makes a formal appearance in the narrative, and yet we discover a significant facet of the Easter message through him, as Jesus literally takes his place and Barabbas walks free from prison. Similarly, Simon of Cyrene is coming in from the country, and yet is forced by the soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus, but there is evidence to believe that this proximity to Jesus on the way to crucifixion has a long-term impact on Simon and his family. On Resurrection Sunday, we will turn to another character in Luke 24, Cleopas, who has a startling encounter with the risen Jesus on the first Easter day. Through this extended conversation on the road to Emmaus—which turns from despair to illumination—we are provided with an inspiring challenge for our own journey of discipleship in this season.”

Rev. Ross Watters will be preaching in the gym on an Easter theme for this Resurrection Sunday!

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

21. Invitation to the Church Center App

We’re excited to introduce the Church Center App, a new way to stay connected and engaged with our BSBC community. Our hope is that this tool strengthens communication, simplifies involvement, and helps every member feel even more at home in our church family.

What You Can Do in the Church Center App

With the Church Center App in Planning Center, you’ll have quick access to features designed to keep you informed and connected:

  •  Weekly Newsletter – Read the latest updates, announcements, and upcoming opportunities.

  • Church Directory – Browse contact information for members who have chosen to share their details.

  • Profile Management – Update your personal information, household details, and privacy settings.

  • Event Calendar – Explore upcoming events and easily find locations.

  • Child Check-In – Pre-select your children for check-in before you arrive.

  • Special Events – Stay informed about major upcoming gatherings and celebrations.

  • Social Media Hub – Scroll to the bottom of the home page to find links to our YouTube services, Facebook community, and Instagram updates.

As we continue to grow, we look forward to adding even more helpful features. Moving toward the Church Center App also allows us to streamline our behind-the-scenes processes, making everything run more smoothly for everyone.

Getting Started

To download the app, you’ll need access to your Apple ID or Google Account information and password.

If you have any questions or need help getting set up, please reach out to Sam, Janet, or Naomi in the church office—we’re happy to help.

22. Church Center Directory

Hello BSBC Family,

We hope this message finds you well! We want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and patience as we work to improve how we stay connected as a church community.

We’re excited to share that BSBC is now using a new online congregational directory that we hope will be more user-friendly and accessible for everyone. This updated directory will serve as a combined contact list and include our official list of Members – both Resident and Non-Resident – as well as Adherents and Guests.

To join the directory, each family member must contact Naomi in the church office at Naomi.Phillips@bsbc.nb.ca to receive their welcome email and get started. Thank you for hanging in with us as we navigate this shift. We truly appreciate your grace and flexibility as we move toward a more connected future. Blessings from the BSBC Church Office.
