1. Happy Chinese New Year!

As we welcome the Lunar New Year, we join our Chinese congregation in celebrating a season filled with hope, blessing, and new beginnings. This festive time—also known as the Spring Festival—is a moment when families gather, homes are brightened with red decorations symbolizing joy, and people reflect on the past year while looking forward with renewed purpose.

Although traditions vary, themes of gratitude, unity, and renewal are common throughout the celebration. These values resonate deeply with our faith. Just as the New Year represents a fresh start, Scripture reminds us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). It is a timely encouragement for us all to embrace the new work God is doing in our lives and in our community.

This year, may the spirit of the season inspire us to seek peace, extend kindness, and celebrate the diverse cultures that enrich our church family. Let us pray for blessings, good health, and God’s guidance in the year ahead. May this new year be filled with joy, hope, and the abundant love of Christ.

2. Annual Business Meeting: Wednesday, February 25

This important gathering will highlight our ministries, opportunities to serve, and financial direction for 2025. Your participation is essential, as we require a quorum of 75 members for voting.

Before the meeting, join us in the gym at 5:15 pm for a Pizza Potluck! We’ll provide a variety of pizzas, including Meat, Works, Veggie and Cheese. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. If you have food intolerances or questions about the potluck, please contact Naomi in the church office at 506-458-8348.

At 6:30 pm, we’ll transition from the gym to the sanctuary to prepare for the start of the ABM. We look forward to seeing you there as we come together to celebrate and plan for the future of our church!

Dr. Calvin Smith, our Moderator, invites the Brunswick Street Baptist Church congregation to attend the Annual Business Meeting (ABM) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 6:45 pm in the sanctuary. To attend online, please contact Naomi at naomi.phillips@bsbc.nb.ca for your Zoom link. In the event of a storm, the meeting will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 6:45 pm.

3. Proposed Constitution Changes

Introduction

The Board of Management and the Board of Deacons requested the formation of an ad hoc Constitution Committee as outlined in the Constitution. David Brodie (BOM representative and Chair) and Stephen VanSlyke (BOD representative) were named. Requests for changes were received from both Boards. The changes proposed for consideration and acceptance by the Church are summarized in this document. It is the request of the Constitution Committee that the proposed changes come to the Church for approval.

Recommended Changes

#1 Chairs of the Board of Deacons and the Board of Management – The Constitution identifies criteria for the Chairs of both the Board of Deacons and the Board of Management. As recently as this past year, it has been the case that the person God has chosen to chair one of the two Boards has not met the criteria. Scott was a previous member of the Board of Deacons returning for his first year of a subsequent term. A change in wording in a similar situation would allow the Nominating Committee to present the name of the Chair of either Board without having to call a Special Business Meeting to resolve the situation.

CURRENT

6.4.1 The nomination for Chair of the Board of Deacons shall be made to the Annual Business Meeting by the Nominating Committee upon the recommendation of the Board of Deacons. The nominee shall be a member of the Board of Deacons who has served at least two (2) years of the first term of office or at least one (1) year of a subsequent term of office.

PROPOSED

6.4.1 The nomination for Chair of the Board of Deacons shall be made to the Annual Business Meeting by the Nominating Committee upon the recommendation of the Board of Deacons. The nominee shall be a member of the Board of Deacons. The nominee should normally have served at least two (2) years of the first term of office or at least one (1) year of a subsequent term of office.

===========================

CURRENT

6.5.1 The nomination for Chair of the Board of Management shall be made to the Annual Business Meeting by the Nominating Committee upon the recommendation of the Board of Management. The nominee shall be a member of the Board of Management who has served at least two (2) years of the first term of office or at least one (1) year of a subsequent term of office.

PROPOSED

6.5.1 The nomination for Chair of the Board of Management shall be made to the Annual Business Meeting by the Nominating Committee upon the recommendation of the Board of Management. The nominee shall be a member of the Board of Management. The nominee should normally have served at least two (2) years of the first term of office or at least one (1) year of a subsequent term of office.

#2 Lead Pastor – An adjustment was made in 2025 to make the Lead Pastor an ex officio non-voting member of all Teams. It was identified that the Audit Team operates independently of the Boards and reports directly to the Annual Meeting. It was an unintentional oversight to add the Lead Pastor to the Audit Team.

CURRENT

5.2.3 The Lead Pastor shall be an ex officio non-voting member of all Boards, Committees, and Teams.

PROPOSED

5.2.3 The Lead Pastor shall be an ex officio non-voting member of all Boards, Committees, and Teams, with the exception of the Audit Team.

#3 ad hoc Constitution Committee – An adjustment in numbering was required following changes made to the Constitution in 2025. In the change, an article number was missed and incorrectly referenced. It needs to be corrected.

CURRENT

13.4 The ad hoc Constitution Committee shall be comprised of representatives from the Board of Management and the Board of Deacons as specified in 13.5 plus other representatives from Committees and the membership of the Church as deemed relevant.

PROPOSED

13.4 The ad hoc Constitution Committee shall be comprised of representatives from the Board of Management and the Board of Deacons as specified in Article 13.2 plus other representatives from Committees and the membership of the Church as deemed relevant.

All are welcome to come for any portion of the hour. The focus of these gatherings is simply to seek the Lord together in prayer, with space for worship and ministry as the Spirit leads. Let this season be marked by drawing near to God in prayer.

10. Volunteering Opportunities

A. Sunday Streets Muffin Ministry: April 5

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way. Your sweet generosity is more than just baked goods; it’s an expression of care and hope in Jesus’ name.

Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as April 5 for our Sunday night outreach program. As we prepare for the busy summer months, we aim to have 4 dozen muffins each week to ensure we’re well-stocked and ready to bless those we serve. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.

13. Adult Bible Studies and Prayer Groups

There is so much going on at our Church that sometimes it is hard to keep track! To help ease your calendar preparation, here is a brief list of current Bible studies and prayer groups that we have on offer:

14. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: February 22

This Sunday is Greenhouse Sunday! All youth grades 6 to 12 are invited to our Greenhouse Youth Worship service in the Assembly Area, on the third floor of the Family Life Center.

In the sanctuary, the worship team will be led by Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves with special music from the Paul Milburn, David Whyte, Pascale Butt, the Sanctuary Choir and the Handbell Choir. In the gym, the worship team will be led by Joel Flores.

Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the gym. Of this sermon, he says; “At the midway point of this past week, ‘Ash Wednesday’ marked the beginning of the season of Lent for 2026, and it the liturgical history of church calendar the 40 days of Lent are a unique period set apart for spiritual recalibration. Believers will often fast or abstain from something that is typically enjoyed in order to break the cycle of consumption, creating some new space that can be filled with something more substantial than temporary comforts. Celebrating Lent also provides an opportunity to reboot the story of Jesus in every aspect of our lives, to move from being a spectator of the Passion Narrative to an active participant, so that the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday become deeply personal as we follow the road to the Cross. As we observe Lent this season, we turn to Matthew 27:15-23, an arresting episode that features an interesting cast of minor characters: the chief priests and elders of the land, a raucous crowd, a typical allotment of soldiers, along with the Roman Governor and his suffering wife. But the most polarizing figure in this episode is the convict Barabbas, and through the lens of this criminal, we are invited to have a radically different perspective on the Easter season that is filled with possibilities for enhancing our journey of discipleship in these days.”

Pastor Ross Watters will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon titled “Nutrition”, he says, “This Sunday in the Gym, we will be continuing the 'Signs of Life' Sermon series based around the acronym MRS GREN, concluding the series with our final sign, Nutrition. As living things thrive by receiving food and processing it into energy, living faith is not sustained by us and our practices alone but by receiving what God provides. Join us as we look at God's people in the wilderness in Exodus 16, and other passages, to further understand that even when we are struggling and hungry, maybe even starting to complain, that God responds not with rebuke, but daily bread. Faith that never receives from God becomes self powered, and self powered faith eventually collapses or grows bitter, so come along as we work through how we receive from God and where we look for nutrition to sustain our faith.”

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

15. Financial Update

We are still praising God for your faithful giving throughout 2025, meeting our full budget needs for the year. As we are looking forward to growth in our ministries in 2026, and toward having greater impact in our community, I want to encourage your continued faithful giving to support God’s work in this place.

God bless, Ken Reimer (Treasurer)
