1. Fall Letter From Pastor

What a beautiful summer it has been — filled with sunshine and warmth! This

year, at the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada’s annual gathering, Oasis, I was struck by how deeply the theme of hospitality and warmth resonated with me.

Here at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, we are a friendly community… but are we truly welcoming? It is a hard question to ask, yet in a season where many new people are arriving in Maritime Canada, how we love — not just how we smile — really matters. As one of those newcomers myself, the theme touched my heart in a very personal way. One image shared at Oasis was of God — Father, Son, and Spirit — in perfect communion, yet widening the circle to invite all in, embracing them fully into the family of God.

As a church, do we simply greet others with a smile, or do we welcome them into our families and homes? Hospitality is essential to any loving community. Are we content to wait for people to come to us, waving hello from a distance and hoping they feel at home… or are our doors and hearts truly open? This question is not just for Sunday mornings — it shapes how we live our entire lives as followers of Jesus.

In our culture, “tolerance” is often seen as enough — putting up with what we may not like. But as clinical psychologist Justine Vogt puts it:

“Hospitality is making your guests feel at home,

even if you wish that is exactly where they were.”

Jesus calls us to something far greater — to love in a way that costs us. It is intentional, sacrificial, and anything but easy. As He says in

Matthew 25:34–40:

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply,

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least

of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

In recent years, many have arrived in this beautiful part of our country — my family included. I can tell you, starting over is not easy. It means being far from loved ones, navigating unfamiliar systems, facing surprise expenses, and often doing so without much support. Without the love and care of our BSBC church family, our journey would have been much harder.

So how well are we, as a church and as followers of Jesus, living as a family with an open circle — one that always has space for “the other”? Do we spend our time, energy, and resources mostly on those we have known for years, while keeping new people at a polite distance? Are we content with “hello” but unwilling to open our homes and our lives?

In these days of rapid change, with many new arrivals and a deeply divided culture, what does it look like for us to be a community of hospitality, love, and welcome? Hebrews 13:1–3 reminds us:

“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show

hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality

to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if

you were together with them in prison,

and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

As I pray for our BSBC family, I sense God calling us to love our new brothers and sisters with intentional care and connection — even when it costs us. May people “experience the love of Jesus” through us, as we “live it out everywhere.” Or, as Nancy Leigh DeMoss says:

“We are never more like Jesus than when we are serving Him or others.

There is no higher calling than to be a servant.”

May our homes and hearts remain open. May our family extend beyond blood to all our brothers and sisters in Christ. And may we live for Jesus with love that shines brightly — especially in these polarizing times — for His name and His glory.

  • Be present on Sunday mornings to engage with children and parents as directed by the Elementary Coordinator

9. Muffin Ministry: Sept 12

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way. Your sweet generosity is more than just baked goods; it’s an expression of care and hope in Jesus’ name.

Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as Sept 12 for our Sunday night outreach program. As we prepare for the busy summer months, we aim to have 4 dozen muffins each week to ensure we’re well-stocked and ready to bless those we serve. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.

13. Adult Bible Studies

There is so much going on at our Church that sometimes it is hard to keep track! To help ease your calendar preparation, here is a brief list of programs and events that we have on offer:

14. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: August 24

In the Sanctuary, the worship team will be led by David and Leah Steeves. In the gym, the worship team will be led by Illyanna Vermeersch.

Rev. Ross Watters will be preaching in the gym.

Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the sanctuary of his sermon titled “After the Battle”, he says “Our short summer series in the book of Judges wraps up with the final installment of the Gideon story. Last time we ended on a cliffhanger: despite his protests, Gideon is chosen to lead the battle against the Midianites, and he must be surprised that God only permits 300 troops to accompany him against a daunting horde! But with a clever tactic involving trumpets and torches, there is a shocking outcome that can only be explained as a divine intervention. After recounting these events, our attention will turn to the aftermath of battle: what happens in light of this spectacular victory? Is there a battle after the battle? While these closing scenes in Judges 8 do not get much attention, they provide us with a cautionary tale that has a range of applications as we seek to be faithful disciples at this particular cultural moment where we find ourselves.”

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

15. Pastoral Care

Your Deacons want to affirm that BSBC is equipped to provide Pastoral Care. We are grateful for our pastors, Rev. Ross and Pastor Nikki, and we are blessed to have additional support from Doug McAllister, our Summer Sanctuary Ministry Coordinator, Benevolent Coordinator and Senior’s Visitation Pastor and Rev. Kevin Culberson, the Baptist Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.

Here are some suggested approaches:

16. Community Events

Ukrainian Artist Kozak Siromaha in Concert

Join us at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 pm for an unforgettable evening with Ukrainian artist Kozak Siromaha.

His music is a modern retelling of ancient stories—honest, powerful, and deeply moving. Kozak Siromaha doesn’t perform as a character; he lives the Kozak tradition through his way of life, the clothing he wears, and the traditional instruments he plays. Each day begins before dawn in prayer to the Almighty Father, and his songs carry a message of hope and resilience: that Ukrainians must never give up, for their land, freedom, and music are God-given treasures.

Tickets available at the door or online. For more information and ticket purchase check out the link:
