1. Fall Letter From Pastor

What a beautiful summer it has been — filled with sunshine and warmth! This

year, at the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada’s annual gathering, Oasis, I was struck by how deeply the theme of hospitality and warmth resonated with me.

Here at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, we are a friendly community… but are we truly welcoming? It is a hard question to ask, yet in a season where many new people are arriving in Maritime Canada, how we love — not just how we smile — really matters. As one of those newcomers myself, the theme touched my heart in a very personal way. One image shared at Oasis was of God — Father, Son, and Spirit — in perfect communion, yet widening the circle to invite all in, embracing them fully into the family of God.

As a church, do we simply greet others with a smile, or do we welcome them into our families and homes? Hospitality is essential to any loving community. Are we content to wait for people to come to us, waving hello from a distance and hoping they feel at home… or are our doors and hearts truly open? This question is not just for Sunday mornings — it shapes how we live our entire lives as followers of Jesus.

In our culture, “tolerance” is often seen as enough — putting up with what we may not like. But as clinical psychologist Justine Vogt puts it:

“Hospitality is making your guests feel at home,

even if you wish that is exactly where they were.”

Jesus calls us to something far greater — to love in a way that costs us. It is intentional, sacrificial, and anything but easy. As He says in

Matthew 25:34–40:

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply,

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least

of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

In recent years, many have arrived in this beautiful part of our country — my family included. I can tell you, starting over is not easy. It means being far from loved ones, navigating unfamiliar systems, facing surprise expenses, and often doing so without much support. Without the love and care of our BSBC church family, our journey would have been much harder.

So how well are we, as a church and as followers of Jesus, living as a family with an open circle — one that always has space for “the other”? Do we spend our time, energy, and resources mostly on those we have known for years, while keeping new people at a polite distance? Are we content with “hello” but unwilling to open our homes and our lives?

In these days of rapid change, with many new arrivals and a deeply divided culture, what does it look like for us to be a community of hospitality, love, and welcome? Hebrews 13:1–3 reminds us:

“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show

hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality

to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if

you were together with them in prison,

and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

As I pray for our BSBC family, I sense God calling us to love our new brothers and sisters with intentional care and connection — even when it costs us. May people “experience the love of Jesus” through us, as we “live it out everywhere.” Or, as Nancy Leigh DeMoss says:

“We are never more like Jesus than when we are serving Him or others.

There is no higher calling than to be a servant.”

May our homes and hearts remain open. May our family extend beyond blood to all our brothers and sisters in Christ. And may we live for Jesus with love that shines brightly — especially in these polarizing times — for His name and His glory.

  • May we offer Praise and thanks to our God for prompting the hearts of 11 folks that have entered the waters of baptism since the first of the year. Four additional candidates have requested to be baptised which will happen soon.

5. Communion Element

Over the past few months, the Board of Deacons has discussed how to be respectful to our environment and being sensitive to how communion is served to those with health concerns. We were unable to source compostable packaging and opted to revert to using our past technique of bread and juice being individually removed from a tray at separate passings. Pre-packaged elements will be made available for those with health concerns. The Board of Deacons look forward to serving you with this new format beginning October.

7. Third Sunday Supper

Third Sunday Supper has been such a blessing, with 45–50 guests joining us each month! We are so thankful for the faithful volunteers who prepare and serve delicious homemade meals. These evenings are more than just supper—they are a time of fellowship as real connections are made through these meals. Many of our guests return month after month as well as new faces. Everyone seems to really enjoy their evening with us as they leave with full hearts as well as full stomach!

We are currently looking for an individual, family, or group to prepare a meal for our December Third Sunday Supper (December 21). We would be appreciative if you would prayerfully consider helping us on this date.

Looking ahead, we are also planning for 2026 and have many months available for volunteers to provide a meal for our guests. If you would like to learn more or are interested in help with Third Sunday Supper, please reach out to Judy Thompson at 506-238-9903 or email judypaul1088@gmail.com

10. Harvest for the Hungry 2025

Fall is here, and once again we have the opportunity to share God’s love with those in need, both within our church family and across the Greater Fredericton area.

Harvest for the Hungry, a ministry of our Social Action Team, invites our BSBC family to bring non-perishable food and household items to the church over the next four weeks. These donations will be shared between our New Life Ministry (supporting families who struggle to ‘make ends meet’) and the Greener Village Fredericton Food Bank.

Here are the specific requests from our New Life Ministry:

  • Spaghetti sauce

  • Spaghetti noodles

  • Soup

  • Canned vegetables

  • Canned meat

  • Cereal

  • Kraft dinner

  • Rice

  • Packaged items for kid’s lunches

  • Toilet Paper

We invite you to bring your ‘harvest’ to the Connections Centre on or before Thanksgiving Sunday where it will be collected and ultimately distributed.

As an alternative, you can make a financial donation to the project by simply designating your gift to “Harvest for the Hungry." Financial donations allows us the opportunity of purchasing the much needed items in bulk at a reduced cost. After Thanksgiving, these financial gifts will be divide evenly between the New Life ministry and Greener Village.

Thank you for making Christ’s love known through your cheerful giving and may God use our ‘harvest’ for His glory!

God is so good.

Social Action Committee

On September 28th we will be having a combined service in the Sanctuary as we celebrate Truth and Reconciliation Sunday together this year. We encourage you to join us in the Sanctuary wearing an orange 'Every Child Matters' shirt if you can. Many local businesses and stores have these shirts available and thank you for considering this simple and yet powerful way to display our awareness and care.

12. Missions Month

This year from Oct 12 to Nov 2, we will have our 'Missions Month' lead by our Missions Committee here at BSBC. We will take time to focus on theme of 'mission' found in the Bible as laid out in Acts 1:8, focussing on mission here at home and abroad, concluding in a final blended 'Celebration Service' on November 2nd.

As a Missions Committee we wish to invite people to participate in Scripture Readings or special music/singing in your native tongue during Missions Month as we reflect on both our Mission as the Church and celebrate the Nations already part of our BSBC Family. If you would like to participate, please contact the BSBC missions committee by emailing joeltrail@gmail.com.

13. Missions Conference: Moncton (Sept. 26 – 27)

Greetings from your BSBC missions committee!

At the heart of Jesus' teachings and of God's love, we find the call to make disciples of all nations! It's a daunting call indeed, yet one that Jesus reaffirmed at the end of his life, just to make sure that we, as his followers, hear of its importance one more time!

A great opportunity to rub shoulders with local, national and international missions is coming our way, September 26 and 27, Friday and Saturday, in Moncton, as the annually held missions conference Jesus to the Nations is taking place in Moncton, at Tidal Church, formerly known as Moncton Wesleyan. Admission is free!

Don't miss this opportunity to chat with various missions agencies, attend engaging workshops and without a doubt, be challenged to partake in a fresh way to the general calling of making disciples.

Get your tickets at the link below.

Go and see how God might just add even more purpose and thrill to your journey with Him on this earth!

Deacon rep on the BSBC Missions Committee

15. A Note from the Schellenbergs

We (Gwyn & Dave) are moving to Yarmouth on September 16. This move is truly bittersweet for us because while we look forward to being close to family and improved quality of life, we will also miss our BSBC family.

Thank you for all the gifts of visits, food and fellowship we have received over the years and especially for your prayers.

We intend to stay in touch and will be tuning in Sunday mornings to watch the services on tv.

Thank you BSBC!

Gwyn and Dave

16. Fall BBQ Recap

We had our Fall BBQ this past weekend and it was a wonderful success!

Even with the rain and a quick pivot in plans, the atmosphere was full of warmth, laughter, and connection. Spirits remained high, and the weather only seemed to bring us closer together. Throughout the day, several impromptu prayer sessions blossomed organically powerful reminders of the strength and unity within our community.

A huge shoutout to the many incredible volunteers who made this event possible. Your flexibility, energy, and dedication were the backbone of the day. Special thanks to Andrea Bragdon and Dwight Colwell for going above and beyond—your leadership and heart truly made all the difference.

We are so grateful for everyone who came out and helped make it such a meaningful gathering!

17. Volunteering Opportunities

Muffin Ministry: Sept 19

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way. Your sweet generosity is more than just baked goods; it’s an expression of care and hope in Jesus’ name.

Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as Sept 19 for our Sunday night outreach program. As we prepare for the busy summer months, we aim to have 4 dozen muffins each week to ensure we’re well-stocked and ready to bless those we serve. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.

Security Volunteers Needed

We’re seeking dedicated volunteers to help keep our church safe and welcoming on weekday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Your presence makes a real difference — creating a warm, secure space where everyone feels at home. If you’re ready to step up and be part of this vital ministry, reach out to Dan Lutes or call the church office at 506-458-8348 to learn more or sign up.

Tellers Needed

Are you a member of BSBC and looking for a simple yet meaningful way to serve?

We are looking for volunteers to join our Tellers Team. This role involves helping count cash, cheques, and debit offerings after the Sunday morning service for just two months a year (about six months apart, such as February and August). The time commitment is about one hour each time, and you’ll be working alongside a small, friendly team.

If you’re interested or have any questions, please contact Andrea Bragdon, Chair of the Nominating Committee, at 506-292-3568 or andreabragdon@rogers.com

Third Sunday Supper Volunteers

We are currently looking for an individual, family, or group to prepare a meal for our December Third Sunday Supper (December 21). We would be appreciative if you would prayerfully consider helping us on this date.

Looking ahead, we are also planning for 2026 and have many months available for volunteers to provide a meal for our guests. If you would like to learn more or are interested in help with Third Sunday Supper, please reach out to Judy Thompson at 506-238-9903 or email judypaul1088@gmail.com

Welcoming With Warmth — Join our Ushers & Greeting Team

Every Sunday, the first smiles and handshakes at Brunswick Street Baptist Church come from our Ushers and Greeting Team. These dedicated volunteers set the tone for worship by creating a welcoming atmosphere by greeting members and guests, offering guidance, answering questions, and helping with seating, making BSBC a place where everyone feels they belong.

We are deeply thankful for their servant hearts and faithful presence each week.

If you feel called to be part of this important ministry, we would love to hear from you! Training and support are provided, and you’ll be joining a team that makes a real difference in people’s experience of worship.

If you’re interested and want more information to volunteer in the greeting team in the gym, please connect with Andrea Bragdon at her email: andreabragdon@rogers.com

If you’re interested and want more information to volunteer in the greeting team in the sanctuary, please connect with Stephen VanSlyke the usher chair at his email vanslyke@unb.ca.

“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

22. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: September 14

In the Sanctuary, the worship team will be led by David Steeves and Gloria Tranquilla with special music from Chris Graves and Sanctuary Choir. In the gym, the worship team will be led by “Julianne Moore”.

Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the gym. Of his sermon titled “The Old Testament in 7 Sentences, Part 1” he says, “A recent book by noted scholar and pastor Christopher Wright is entitled ‘The Old Testament in 7 sentences,’ and provides a short introduction to a breathtaking topic. In a short two-part series to kick off this month of September we will explore these 7 sentences and survey a handful of seminal moments in our faith: Genesis 1:1, Genesis 12:3, and Exodus 20:2, 1 Samuel 13:14 in part 1, followed by Micah 6:8, Isaiah 52:7, and Psalm 23:1 in part 2. Through this study—and a forthcoming sequel, The New Testament in 7 Sentences—we will get reacquainted with some highpoints of the biblical message and be further equipped with God’s Word as we enter a new season here at TheStreet. Not only will this series remind of the major movements in our faith, but there will also be some immediate encouragement as seek to share our living hope to a world in need.”

Rev. Ross Watters will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon he says “This week in the sanctuary, join us as we have week 3 in our Signs of Life sermon series, Sensitivity. I wonder where your heart is these days? It can be easy for overwhelm or negativity to take control as we both look outward at the world around and inward at our own heart. In Hebrew thought, the “heart” is not emotions alone, but the center of will, thought, and decision-making. In Ezekiel 36 we read that God promises us a new heart and infill us with His Spirit to be equipped and transformed for the new way of living He has for us, all His work and for His glory! We will follow this reflection with a time of Communion to re set and re focus our hearts on our Lord and Saviour. See you Sunday!”

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.
