1. Fall Letter From Pastor
What a beautiful summer it has been — filled with sunshine and warmth! This
year, at the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada’s annual gathering, Oasis, I was struck by how deeply the theme of hospitality and warmth resonated with me.
Here at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, we are a friendly community… but are we truly welcoming? It is a hard question to ask, yet in a season where many new people are arriving in Maritime Canada, how we love — not just how we smile — really matters. As one of those newcomers myself, the theme touched my heart in a very personal way. One image shared at Oasis was of God — Father, Son, and Spirit — in perfect communion, yet widening the circle to invite all in, embracing them fully into the family of God.
As a church, do we simply greet others with a smile, or do we welcome them into our families and homes? Hospitality is essential to any loving community. Are we content to wait for people to come to us, waving hello from a distance and hoping they feel at home… or are our doors and hearts truly open? This question is not just for Sunday mornings — it shapes how we live our entire lives as followers of Jesus.
In our culture, “tolerance” is often seen as enough — putting up with what we may not like. But as clinical psychologist Justine Vogt puts it:
“Hospitality is making your guests feel at home,
even if you wish that is exactly where they were.”
Jesus calls us to something far greater — to love in a way that costs us. It is intentional, sacrificial, and anything but easy. As He says in
Matthew 25:34–40:
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply,
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least
of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
In recent years, many have arrived in this beautiful part of our country — my family included. I can tell you, starting over is not easy. It means being far from loved ones, navigating unfamiliar systems, facing surprise expenses, and often doing so without much support. Without the love and care of our BSBC church family, our journey would have been much harder.
So how well are we, as a church and as followers of Jesus, living as a family with an open circle — one that always has space for “the other”? Do we spend our time, energy, and resources mostly on those we have known for years, while keeping new people at a polite distance? Are we content with “hello” but unwilling to open our homes and our lives?
In these days of rapid change, with many new arrivals and a deeply divided culture, what does it look like for us to be a community of hospitality, love, and welcome? Hebrews 13:1–3 reminds us:
“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show
hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality
to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if
you were together with them in prison,
and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”
As I pray for our BSBC family, I sense God calling us to love our new brothers and sisters with intentional care and connection — even when it costs us. May people “experience the love of Jesus” through us, as we “live it out everywhere.” Or, as Nancy Leigh DeMoss says:
“We are never more like Jesus than when we are serving Him or others.
There is no higher calling than to be a servant.”
May our homes and hearts remain open. May our family extend beyond blood to all our brothers and sisters in Christ. And may we live for Jesus with love that shines brightly — especially in these polarizing times — for His name and His glory.

4. Celebrating the 10 Anniversary of BSBC Chinese Congregation
Last weekend we joyfully celebrated the 10th Anniversary of BSBC Chinese Congregation!
Over the course of three days, we welcomed more than 30 brothers and sisters traveling from Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. Saturday’s celebration gathered over 120 people, and friends from the Moncton and Saint John Chinese churches also joined us to rejoice in God’s abundant grace together.
On Sunday, following the worship service, two brothers and sisters were baptized at Killarney Lake, publicly declaring their new life in Christ. What a beautiful way to conclude our anniversary celebration!
May God continue to lead our Chinese Congregation, granting us vision and strength to walk faithfully in the years ahead, fulfilling His good and perfect will!

7. Oasis Report
August 7 – 9, 2025 – Dr. John Stewart
Each OASIS meeting typically has its own personality. This year I found the meeting, held at Acadia University, to have a lot of energy - in the worship, the plenary speakers, concurrent sessions and among the 541 attendees. Many attendees expressed their sense of God’s presence.
The meetings began with praise and worship and then moved to presentations: business (1 ½ days), speakers addressing the OASIS theme of Hope upon Hope (4 presentations), choice of attending two of the 28 breakout sessions, presentations by Acadia Divinity College and Crandall University, and several meetings centred around special interest groups. I want to summarize the themes of Hope upon Hope and one of the breakout sessions. Renee MacVicar emphasized that our hope and strength to endure comes from God. Further, she encouraged believers to put their hope and faith into action in the service of others. Joel Murphy’s message was that, in times of change leaders can have hope for the future by reflecting on how ministry can address these changes aided by the Holy Spirit.
Lastly, I would encourage members to attend OASIS. It can be an informative and uplifting experience. I want to express my thanks to the church for the stipend to cover travelling costs. For further summary of OASIS check out the summary video at this link below.

9. A Note from the Schellenbergs
We (Gwyn & Dave) are moving to Yarmouth on September 16. This move is truly bittersweet for us because while we look forward to being close to family and improved quality of life, we will also miss our BSBC family.
Thank you for all the gifts of visits, food and fellowship we have received over the years and especially for your prayers.
We intend to stay in touch and will be tuning in Sunday mornings to watch the services on tv.
Thank you BSBC!
Gwyn and Dave
10. Muffin Ministry: Sept 19
On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way. Your sweet generosity is more than just baked goods; it’s an expression of care and hope in Jesus’ name.
Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as Sept 19 for our Sunday night outreach program. As we prepare for the busy summer months, we aim to have 4 dozen muffins each week to ensure we’re well-stocked and ready to bless those we serve. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.
Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.
11. Security Volunteers Needed
We’re seeking dedicated volunteers to help keep our church safe and welcoming on weekday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Your presence makes a real difference — creating a warm, secure space where everyone feels at home. If you’re ready to step up and be part of this vital ministry, reach out to Dan Lutes or call the church office at 506-458-8348 to learn more or sign up.
12. Tellers Needed
Are you a member of BSBC and looking for a simple yet meaningful way to serve?
We are looking for volunteers to join our Tellers Team. This role involves helping count cash, cheques, and debit offerings after the Sunday morning service for just two months a year (about six months apart, such as February and August). The time commitment is about one hour each time, and you’ll be working alongside a small, friendly team.
If you’re interested or have any questions, please contact Andrea Bragdon, Chair of the Nominating Committee, at 506-292-3568 or andreabragdon@rogers.com
13. Welcoming With Warmth — Join our Ushers & Greeting Team
Every Sunday, the first smiles and handshakes at Brunswick Street Baptist Church come from our Ushers and Greeting Team. These dedicated volunteers set the tone for worship by creating a welcoming atmosphere by greeting members and guests, offering guidance, answering questions, and helping with seating, making BSBC a place where everyone feels they belong.
We are deeply thankful for their servant hearts and faithful presence each week.
If you feel called to be part of this important ministry, we would love to hear from you! Training and support are provided, and you’ll be joining a team that makes a real difference in people’s experience of worship.
If you’re interested and want more information to volunteer in the greeting team in the gym, please connect with Andrea Bragdon at her email: andreabragdon@rogers.com
If you’re interested and want more information to volunteer in the greeting team in the sanctuary, please connect with Stephen VanSlyke the usher chair at his email vanslyke@unb.ca.

This Sunday, we will be celebrating at the Lord’s table. We will also be hosting a Fall Barbeque after service.
Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon titled “The Old Testament in 7 Sentences, Part 1”, he says “A recent book by noted scholar and leader Christopher Wright is entitled “The Old Testament in 7 sentences,” and provides a short introduction to a wonderful topic. In a short two-part series to kick off this month of September we will explore these 7 sentences, and survey these seminal moments in our faith: Genesis 1:1, Genesis 12:3, and Exodus 20:2, 1 Samuel 13:14 in part 1, and Micah 6:8, Isaiah 52:7, and Psalm 23:1 in part 2. Through this study—and a forthcoming sequel, The New Testament in 7 Sentences—we will get reacquainted with some highpoints of the biblical message, and be further equipped with God’s Word as we enter a new season here at TheStreet.”
Rev. Ross Watters will be preaching in the gym. Of his sermon he says “This week in the Gym, join us as we have week 3 in our Signs of Life sermon series, Sensitivity. I wonder where your heart is these days? It can be easy for overwhelm or negativity to take control as we both look outward at the world around and inward at our own heart. In Hebrew thought, the “heart” is not emotions alone, but the center of will, thought, and decision-making. In Ezekiel 36 we read that God promises us a new heart and infill us with His Spirit to be equipped and transformed for the new way of living He has for us, all His work and for His glory! We will follow this reflection with a time of Communion to re set and re focus our hearts on our Lord and Saviour. See you Sunday!”
Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

FREDERICTON CHORAL SOCIETY LAUNCH
Hello Fredericton singers! The fall is coming, and we hope you’ll consider joining the Fredericton Choral Society for the singing of some choral classics. This fall our concert date is Dec. 16, 2025, and we will be performing highlights from Part 1 of Handel's "Messiah" as well as "Carols of the Nativity" by Stephen Chatman, accompanied by the East Coast Brass.
The Fredericton Choral Society is a non-auditioned choir which rehearses each Monday, 7-9 p.m. at Christ Church (Parish) Church, corner of Westmorland and Charlotte Streets in downtown Fredericton. Our first rehearsal for fall 2025 will be Monday, September 8, 7-9 p.m. at “The Parish Church”. You’ll enjoy some delicious treats, meeting fellow singers and getting a first glimpse of the repertoire on offer.
Our registration fee is your choice on a sliding scale of $65 - $80 for members and $25 for students. In addition, if you are not able to sing with us this term but would like to hold membership and stay in touch, please register to join us as an associate member for $10 for the year.
You can pre-register online via the link below. Registration fees can be paid by e-transfer to Treasurer Gerry Pot at tripproader@gmail.com or in person at the first rehearsal. For more information, please contact: Greg Geldart, gregfredericton@gmail.com.
McAdams Funeral Home — Letters to Loved Ones
To all of our esteemed local churches and their families,
McAdam's Funeral Home is proud to invite you to our 2nd annual Letters to Loved Ones Scattering Ceremony, being held on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, at 7:00pm, at McAdam's Funeral Home, located at 160 York Street, Fredericton.
Our Letters to Loved Ones program started last year and is intended to support local bereaved families in their grief. We welcome anyone to write a letter to their loved one and place it into our secure mail box installed in the M. Joyce Perry Memorial Garden beside our building on the corner of York and Brunswick Street. These letters are gathered, unopened, and kept safely with us, then once a year they are burned, releasing the messages of love to those who have been lost. The ashes are then used in our scattering ceremony alongside a short message of remembrance and time for fellowship along with some refreshments.
There is no cost to attend, and registration is not required. All are welcome, regardless of which funeral home was entrusted with arrangements, or how long ago the loved one passed away.
For more information, please see our info page below.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out by phone or email, I would be happy to discuss this program further. We do hope you can join us on September 9th.
